Growing up in the greater Detroit area, I was exposed to a diverse community with various backgrounds and challenges. From a young age, I witnessed the struggles many people faced in accessing healthcare. This awareness deepened during my medical school years in India, where I saw firsthand how financial constraints often dictated whether families sought medical care. These experiences shaped my understanding of the significant impact that affordable and accessible healthcare can have on individuals and communities. During my residency, I encountered similar challenges, particularly among those without insurance. I often felt helpless when patients couldn’t receive the care they needed due to financial barriers. Even those with insurance faced hurdles, struggling to get coverage for essential tests and medications despite paying high premiums. After years of working within the corporate healthcare system, I grew increasingly frustrated with the limitations it placed on patient care. Long waits for brief appointments, rushed consultations, and the inability to provide comprehensive care left many patients in the dark about their own health.
