Jennifer Smith, DO

Kansas
Lawrence

I grew up in Topeka, KS.  However, I was born in Philadelphia, PA. My dad brought us back to KS to be closer to his family.  My maternal side is from the east coast, which is where I spent many summers growing up.

My maternal aunt was a nurse.  She gave me my first stethoscope when I was 5 years old.  From that day on,  I worked really hard to become the physician I am today. I went to college and graduated from Washburn University with a BA in Biology and Chemistry.  Then I headed out East for medical school.  My mom’s family still lives out east, and I wanted to spread my wings without really spreading them too far.  I guess Philly is still pretty far, but having family there really made it more like home.

I attended The Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine achieving first my Masters Certificate in Biomedical Sciences before entering their Osteopathic Medical Program.  I graduated in the top 10% in my medical school class in 2006.  I continued my education with a Family Medicine/OMT rural residency in Sayre, PA with Guthrie Health Systems.

OMT stands for Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment.  I went to an osteopathic school, because I wanted to be able to learn about how to use my hands to help re-align the body so that the body could do it’s job of healing.  I chose to do a rural residency, because I am a country girl at heart.  I am not too keen on the fast pace city life.

I graduated from residency in 2009 and was named Resident of the Year that year as well.  I worked for the first 5 years out of residency in Blue Earth, MN with United Health District.  This was a very small rural community, which is the type of community I love.  While in Blue Earth, I was able to go to training and be certified in Botox cosmetic injections and permanent hair reduction.  I love doing this stuff. Plus, it makes people feel good about themselves, which just adds to their wellness.

I moved back to Kansas after having a few medical emergencies in the family that I was not able to hover over being so far away.  I worked for St. Francis Health Systems for 2 years, which allowed me to realize my dream of opening up my own direct primary care clinic, Accomplished Health and Wellness LLC.
This clinic is ever evolving as my tastes in medicine change.  I am not a pill pusher.  In fact, if you have a cold, I will tell you.  I am very big in preventative medicine.  I am learning more and more about alternative therapies and am really interested in learning more about culinary medicine.  Hopefully, I will be able to incorporate these into my practice in the future.
